Hill to Horizon at Otama Beach, one of the regional winners in the house category of the annual awards presented by the New Zealand Institute of Architects.

Success in forging a comfortable relationship with their surroundings was a common theme supporting two northern Coromandel baches to secure honours at the recently-announced Waikato/Bay of Plenty Architecture Awards.

Waiapapa Bach, located in Whangapoua, and Hill to Horizon at Otama Beach were both selected as regional winners in the house category of the annual awards presented by the New Zealand Institute of Architects.

The judges described how the Whangapoua home spoke to its surroundings “…with scoria-red corrugated iron and walnut-stained cedar cladding recalling the classic Kiwi farm shed.

“The house nestles into its location next to the Pungapunga river and responds sympathetically to the landscape beyond. Everything is considered, from exceptional detailing to spaces that are both functional and inviting, from multi-use bedrooms to an open-plan entertaining area. Outdoor rooms with screen actuators mimic the ritualistic aspects of camping while retaining access to the comforts of modern living.”

The house, a four-bedroom family beach retreat, was designed by Strachan Group Architects (SGA), constructed by North Coromandel Builders.

Waiapapa Bach, located in Whangapoua. NZIA Local Award Winner – 2021 – Housing

SGA describe the house as, “drawing aesthetic inspiration from the vernacular red shed across the adjacent banks of the Pungapunga river.”

Hill to Horizon at Otama Beach was described as “…cleverly modelled with a mannered response to the surrounding neighbourhood, this holiday house fits easily into its rural, coastal setting. The stained cedar cladding changes colour with the light, lending a mutable versatility to the exterior. The well-appointed and comfortable interior and outdoor living spaces ably cater for a couple or a holiday crowd. The quality of the bathrooms is particularly worthy of mention. Both restful and lively, this is a house of many moods.” The house was designed by Studio Brick Architects and Lloyd Hartley Architects.

A total of three of the seven category winners were on the Coromandel with a bach in Whangamata also featuring, prompting the award organisers to specifically note the increased volume of houses being built on the Peninsula.

Customer Testimonial from Google –

“Having recently completed out new home with Urban, we could not be happier. The house itself is awesome, finished it an amazing standard and the build and project couldn’t have gone better.

The communication was amazing from the whole Urban team and any minor issue was sorted before we could even mention it to them.

100% would recommend anyone in the Waikato looking to build a home to go through Urban.”
